Four Pedestrians and Cyclists Injured in 2019

SAN DIEGO (January 8th, 2018) – Four pedestrians and one cyclist have been seriously injured in the first eight days of 2019. This follows 57 pedestrian, motorcyclist, and motorist deaths on the City of San Diego’s streets in 2018, according to the San Diego Police Department.

“San Diegans lives don’t have to be at risk on our streets,” said Maya Rosas, Policy Director for Circulate San Diego. “Serious injuries and fatalities are preventable if our elected officials commit to making streets safe.”

On January 4th, two pedestrians were hit by drivers on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard in separate incidents, one at Pocahontas Avenue around 5:45pm, and the other at 10:00pm mid-block between Convoy Street and Ruffner Street. Last night, a bicyclists crossing W Mission Bay Drive was struck by a driver, who fled the scene. This morning, a pedestrian was hit by a driver at Black Mountain Road and Mira Mesa Boulevard around 5:00am.

Circulate San Diego and a diverse coalition of 20 organizations have promoted a campaign for the last three years called Vision Zero, with the goal to end traffic deaths and serious injuries in San Diego by 2025. Mayor Faulconer and the San Diego City Council adopted a 10-year Vision Zero strategy in 2015.

The concept behind Vision Zero is that traffic deaths are preventable – through safe street design, education, and enforcement. The program has been successful in other U.S. and European cities. To date, 20 cities across the U.S. have adopted a Vision Zero goal.
