Press Conference: Circulate San Diego and Housing Advocates Call on MTS to Develop Empty Parking Lots Into Affordable Homes

Circulate San Diego will host a press conference with affordable housing advocates on Thursday morning to call on the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) to  allow their under-utilized parking lots to be developed into affordable homes.

When: Thursday, May 10th, 8:15 AM

Where: 12th and Imperial Station Plaza, 1255 Imperial Ave, San Diego, CA 92101

Who:

  • Colin Parent, Circulate San Diego
  • Lori Pfeiler, Habitat for Humanity and Housing You Matters
  • Laura Nunn, San Diego Housing Federation
  • Carol Kim, San Diego County Building and Construction Trades Council

What: Circulate San Diego recently released a report “Real Opportunity,” with recommendations for how MTS can stimulate the creation of up to 8,000 new homes adjacent to transit stations. The report also included new research demonstrating that a large number of parking lots owned by MTS were substantially under-utilized.

Following the press conference, supporters will speak at non-agenda public comment at the MTS Board of Directors meeting at 9:00am. Visuals include background images of underutilized parking lots, buses, and trolleys. Requests for comments or other accommodations from MTS should be directed to Rob Schupp, [email protected], (619) 557-4511.
