Crash Not Accident San Diego Campaign Kick-Off and Panel To Raise Awareness for Traffic Safety

Tomorrow, nonprofit think tank Circulate San Diego will launch a month-long Crash Not Accident campaign with a panel to educate San Diego media and the public-at-large about the national Crash Not Accident movement. The term “accident” can lead people to believe that crashes are inevitable, whereas they can actually be prevented with careful driving, safe street design, and other Vision Zero principles.

When: Thursday, August 6th, 5pm

Where: Zoom Link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84065267203?pwd=ZFNpUThabkJVNklIdHNSMUE0emhjUT09  (full Zoom information below)

Who:

  • Leah Shahum, Founder & Director, Vision Zero Network
  • Andrew Bowen, Metro Reporter, KPBS
  • Colin Parent, Executive Director and General Counsel, Circulate San Diego
  • Maya Rosas, Director of Policy, Circulate San Diego

What: Words matter. Crash Not Accident is a campaign to educate San Diegans about our role preventing traffic deaths and serious injuries by acknowledging that crashes are not merely accidents but the result of human error and systemic decisions.

The Associated Press Stylebook articulates why #CrashNotAccident is important for residents, reporters, and local government to adopt: the word accident “can be read as exonerating the person responsible.”

Tomorrow’s panel will aim to educate and inform San Diego journalists and the public about the impacts of how traffic crashes and safe street policies are discussed in the media.

The panel will launch a month-long campaign that will include PSA graphics for sharing on social media, an online pledge for the public to commit to saying “crash,” not “accident,” and signs that Circulate will install at the location of some recent fatal traffic crashes to raise awareness of the need for safe streets.
