Press Conference: Circulate San Diego and Housing Advocates Call on MTS to Update Policy to Develop Empty Parking Lots Into Affordable Homes
Circulate San Diego will host a press conference with affordable housing advocates on Thursday morning to call on the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) to update its joint development policy to allow their under-utilized parking lots to be developed into affordable homes.
When: Thursday, September 20th, 8:15 AM
Where: 12th and Imperial Station Plaza, 1255 Imperial Ave, San Diego, CA 92101
Who:
- Colin Parent, Circulate San Diego
- Mary Lydon, Housing You Matters
- Stephen Russell, San Diego Housing Federation
What: Circulate San Diego released a report in April called “Real Opportunity,” with recommendations for how MTS can stimulate the creation of up to 8,000 new homes adjacent to transit stations. Since then, MTS staff drafted a policy update that is an improvement, but must go further to ensure this real opportunity comes to fruition and more homes get built.
Following the press conference, supporters will speak at in public comment during a discussion at the MTS Board of Directors meeting about revising the joint development policy. The meeting starts at 9:00am. Visuals include background images of underutilized parking lots, buses, and trolleys. Requests for comments or other accommodations from MTS should be directed to Rob Schupp, [email protected], (619) 557-4511.
