Press Release: Circulate San Diego Congratulates MTS and NCTD for Launching PRONTO Fare Payment System

Today, Circulate San Diego is pleased to congratulate the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) and the North County Transit District (NCTD) for launching the PRONTO fare payment system.

“Circulate San Diego has advocated for years to modernize our region’s fare payment options,” said Colin Parent, Executive Director and General Counsel with Circulate San Diego. “We are very pleased that the new PRONTO system incorporates many of our recommendations, and will make transit more affordable and accessible.”

Circulate initially launched its campaign to update fare payment systems in 2016, and succeeded in 2017 to implement stored value on the previous Compass Card. Stored value is also incorporated in PRONTO.

Research from Circulate San Diego in 2018 showed that MTS was one of only two of the twenty largest transit agencies in the United States to not provide free or reduced-price transfers. After advocacy from Circulate, the MTS Board incorporated that policy into the new PRONTO system.

PRONTO will replace the Compass Card and Cloud systems entirely, offering riders a better payment experience when choosing transit.
