Essential Workers Rely on Transit in San Diego: New Circulate White Paper Released

Today, Circulate San Diego released a new white paper, Essential Transit: How essential workers in the San Diego region continue to rely on transit while responding to COVID-19. This followed a virtual press conference with MTS and the Mayor of National City.

Essential Transit uses Census data to analyze how many of the San Diego region’s essential workers rely on public transit. Our analysis finds that 35 percent of usual transit ridership are essential workers. These and other findings will be shared, followed by time for questions from the press.

Speakers at the press conference included:

  • Honorable Alejandra Sotelo-Solis, Mayor, City of National City
  • Colin Parent, Executive Director and General Counsel, Circulate San Diego
  • Rob Schupp, Director of Marketing and Communications, Metropolitan Transit System
“Nearly 16,000 essential workers in the San Diego region commute to on the region’s buses and, trains every day to their jobs,” said Colin Parent, Executive Director and General Counsel of Circulate San Diego and a co-author. “San Diego must continue to keep transit as a priority for our region’s transportation network.”
