Press Release: Two Serious Injuries in Hit-and-Run Crashes Over Memorial Day Weekend
SAN DIEGO (June 2, 2021) — Two pedestrians were seriously injured in hit-and-run crashes over Memorial Day weekend.
Circulate released its report, “Hope for Vision Zero” this month, showing modest improvements to street safety in the City of San Diego since committing to Vision Zero in 2015. However, traffic injuries and fatalities remain unacceptably high.
In the first crash, an 87-year-old pedestrian was injured when she was struck by a driver in the Marina neighborhood of the City of San Diego. At around 3:00 p.m. on May 30, the pedestrian was crossing G Street when she was struck. She was admitted to the ICU with a laceration to the back of the head and a brain bleed. The vehicle fled the scene.
The next day, a 49-year-old pedestrian was injured when he was struck by a driver in the Rolando neighborhood of the City of San Diego. At around 1:00 a.m., the pedestrian was crossing in an unmarked crosswalk on El Cajon Boulevard when a driver in a dark colored sedan struck him and fled without stopping. The pedestrian suffered an open fracture to his leg.
“No one should fear for their lives on San Diego streets,” said Colin Parent, Executive Director and General Counsel for Circulate San Diego. “We must do more to encourage drivers to see traffic crashes as preventable and to choose to drive safely.”
Circulate San Diego currently leads Crash Not Accident and Vision Zero campaigns, which are both efforts to end traffic deaths and serious injuries on San Diego streets.
