What is the Central Mobility Hub?
The San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) is working to improve the way people travel throughout the San Diego region – making it easier and more convenient to get where you need to go without having to rely on a car. Mobility hubs are transit-oriented spaces that enhance the community and travel experience by featuring an array of amenities, recreation areas, and mobility services.
As a proposed multimodal transportation center, the Central Mobility Hub (CMH) would connect San Diego International Airport with transportation options like the Trolley, COASTER, Amtrak Pacific Surfliner, Rapid and local bus, biking, and ridesharing. It could also include amenities such as housing, office space, shopping, park areas, and more.
CMH Comprehensive Multimodal Corridor Plan
As part of the Central Mobility Hub project, SANDAG and Caltrans are exploring ways to provide increased regional connectivity to San Diego International Airport (SDIA) while improving multimodal travel in the surrounding area. A new airport transit connection would link to a future Central Mobility Hub in Downtown, where all modes of public transportation would come together in one location to improve transit access for all residents of the region.
Developing a Comprehensive Multimodal Corridor Plan (CMCP) that includes transportation solutions to support the proposed airport transit connections is an important step in realizing the Central Mobility Hub. The CMCP will serve as a guiding document that will lead and inform future decisions for the CMH and the multimodal transportation system throughout the study area. Completing the plan will help the San Diego region compete for state and federal funds to implement proposed projects in the future.
Study Area
The CMH and Connections CMCP focus area includes the Midway District, Old Town San Diego, parts of Point Loma, and Downtown San Diego. Major transportation corridors being studied include Interstate 5, Interstate 8, Pacific Highway, other transportation connections. Existing transit services include the COASTER, the Trolley, and multiple Rapid and local bus lines.
