Support Circulate at a San Diego Mojo Professional Volleyball Game!

San Diego Mojo is a new professional women’s volleyball team competing in the Pro Volleyball Federation. For each of their 12 home games, Mojo is highlighting local non-profit organizations to grow awareness of important initiatives while uplifting women’s sports. Circulate is excited to announce that we will be partnering with the team during their games on Tuesday, April 2nd and Friday, April 26th!

All San Diego Mojo games are conveniently located at SDSU’s Viejas Arena and easily accessible by public transportation. Both games will start at 7:00pm. We’d love for you to join us at these games to cheer on the Mojo!

Save the Date: 3rd Annual Southeast San Diego Transportation Expo

Save the date for the 3rd Annual Southeast San Diego Transportation Expo on April 6th from 9 AM -1 PM! The event will be held at Gomper's Prep Academy in Chollas View and hosted by The Urban Collaborative Project. This family friendly event will feature bike rodeos, bike/scooter giveaways, and other transportation demos for families to learn more about transportation justice and climate action in Southeast San Diego. Recap: Developmental Disability Awareness Month at Museum School

As a part of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, Circulate enjoyed working with Museum School for 2 weeks to teach the students about accessible infrastructure, pedestrian safety, and being smart pedestrians!

Circulate collaborated with the Museum’s School staff and the Special Education Department to provide fun programs to the students. The students enjoyed interactive presentations focused on pedestrian safety, complete streets, and accessibility.   Circulate got to Museum School early on a Friday to have a Walk’ N’ Roll to School Day, where the students got incentives to walk, bike, or roll to school.

Lastly, the 7th graders went on a Walking Field Trip, where they got to experience first-hand the importance of proper pedestrian infrastructure and smooth sidewalks.

Logan Memorial Educational Campus – Walk & Roll to School Day!

This past Wednesday, the Circulate team collaborated with Logan Memorial Educational Campus on a Walk & Roll to School Day for their Secondary Campus. Many students walked, biked, scootered, and rolled to campus and picked a safety item from the table. Bike lights, bike bells, and reflective bracelets were quite popular, especially for students whose bikes did not have any.

We were delighted to share as many safety resources as possible with students and parents. Thank you to one such parent, Assemblymember David Alvarez, for stopping by to say hello! The Circulate team will be conducting more Walk & Roll to School Days in the coming month around the Logan neighborhoods.

Policy Counsel Will Moore Joins Home Builder’s Alliance for Sacramento Lobby Day, Promotes AB2560 for Coastal Housing Access

On March 19, 2023, Circulate's Policy Counsel Will Moore spoke to the California Legislature about AB2560, enhancing housing access at the coast and applying California's successful density bonus law to the coastal communities that need it.

Will reviewed the day with a video from the steps of the Capitol.

Victory by Vibrant Uptown Shows Success of Planning Group Reform

Circulate has been advocating for reform of the City of San Diego’s Community Planning Groups for years – from our 2018 report "Democracy in Planning," to our coalition work in 2022 supporting the successful reform package, and many points in between.

On March 21, 2024, that advocacy bore new dividends when a group called Vibrant Uptown received unanimous recommendation of the City Council’s Land Use and Housing Committee to take over as the next Uptown Community Planning Group in Uptown.

The full Council will have to confirm that choice, and then elections will have to be held under Vibrant’s new bylaws. But Vibrant’s structural approach ensures more representative balance.

Vibrant Uptown member Jon Anderson described how they achieved this victory and what it means for the community:

"Vibrant Uptown is thrilled with the outcome of the vote, and for what it means for the future here in Uptown!

Both groups promised more outreach to more accurately reflect the community. But we went further and designated seats for one renter and one homeowner per neighborhood - putting that structural guarantee directly in the bylaws.

Roughly 59% of the people in the Uptown neighborhoods are renters, and prior boards have not typically reflected that balance no matter how much outreach they did. The City Council felt that our structural approach would keep the planning group representative in the long term. That's what put us over the top.”

UPDATE: Making The Most of the MidCoast – University Plan Environmental Review Marks Big Win For Circulate And Allies

Circulate celebrated a major victory this week when the University Plan Update moved another step to reality with the release of the Draft Program Environmental Impact Report.

Throughout 2023, Circulate and our allies called for the EIR to include an alternative plan that would add 26,000 more units of housing than the City's base proposal. As demonstrated by the Making The Most of The Mid Coast Report, this vital region needs housing growth to take advantage of its status as a transit, education and employment hub.

Our efforts were successful, as the EIR released on March 14, 2024 evaluated our preferred alternative and found it to be "the environmentally superior alternative". (p. 815 of the EIR)

The San Diego Planning Department anticipates the City Council will choose which plan to adopt in the fall. Circulate and our allies will continue to push to Make the Most of the Mid Coast.
