2024 SCAG Go Human Safety Strategies

Circulate received a grant from the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) to run the 2024 Go Human Safety Strategies Program which included administering the 2024 Go Human Community Streets Grant Program.

Southern California has some of the highest rates of collisions involving people walking and biking in the nation. On average, in the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) region, which comprises six counties (Imperial, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties), 191 cities and nearly 19 million people:

  • 1,600 people die every year from collisions
  • 7,000 people sustain serious injuries every year from collisions
  • 140,000 people sustain injuries every year from collisions
  • 270 collisions per day, equaling roughly 99,000 per year

In response, Go Human launched in 2015 to address the rising rates of injuries and collisions. Today, the Campaign continues to grow and innovate, as a nationally recognized, award-winning active transportation safety and encouragement Campaign that aims to reduce traffic collisions and encourages people to walk and bike more across the region, while reducing vehicle miles traveled and greenhouse gas emissions.

The Campaign supports a regional transportation nexus through a coordinated strategy of neighborhood- and community-level safety and engagement strategies. All strategies support the region wide Safety Pledge, encouraging SCAG’s 197 jurisdictions as well as community partners, agencies and residents to commit to safety.

Through this project, Circulate handled a variety of tasks. Deliverables and a few highlights can be found below.
