Get Kids to School Safely Rally

Please join us on Friday, May 30 at 1:00 PM for a“Get Kids to School Safely” rally and press conference at University Avenue and Cherokee Avenue in City Heights. Together, we’ll show San Diego city leaders the broad and growing support for safer streets and the urgent need to protect kids on their way to school.

This intersection is one of San Diego’s Fatal 15—locations with the highest number of pedestrian fatalities and multiple injuries involving people walking and biking—yet it remains unrepaired. It also sits along one of the city’s Six Critical Corridors(University Ave from 35th to 48th), identified by SANDAG as one of the 6 most dangerous areas for pedestrians. With multiple elementary schools with a quarter mile, children and families face daily risk simply trying to get to and from school.

Since 2012, this corridor has seen62 pedestrian and cyclist injuries and 2 deaths within a block of each other, including a fatal crash at this very intersection in August 2020.

At this rally, we’ll be urging the City to fund the Vision Zero Coalition’s budget priorities, including:

  • Safety improvements along the Six Critical Corridors near schools
  • Fixing the Fatal 15 intersections
  • Reducing speeds in school zones using AB 43

Your presence matters. By showing up, we send a clear message: our kids and families deserve safe streets to walk, bike, and roll to school—and our neighborhoods deserve safer, more livable infrastructure for everyone.

Please bring friends, family, and neighbors, and help us spread the word by sharing this event with your networks. The more voices we have, the louder our call for action.
