PRESS RELEASE: CIRCULATE SAN DIEGO CONGRATULATES CITY COUNCIL FOR PASSING COMMUNITY PLANNING GROUP REFORM.

SAN DIEGO (September 13, 2022) - The San Diego City Council voted six to one today to adopt reforms to community planning groups put forward by City Councilmember Joe LaCava. The reforms will encourage diversity within the groups, prohibit some antidemocratic practices, and bring them into compliance with the City Charter.

“The reforms adopted today will help community planning is in the City of San Diego be fairer and more inclusive,” said Colin Parent, executive director and general counsel of Circulate San Diego.

The reforms are a major breakthrough after of years of advocacy led by Circulate San Diego. Circulate released its report “Democracy in Planning” in February 2018. That report was followed by a grand jury report, recommendations from the City’s Land Use and Housing Committee, and several legal memos from the City Attorney and Circulate San Diego, all calling for reforms. That work is cataloged on Circulate San Diego’s website.
