SDSU Creative Crosswalk Demonstrations

Circulate received a grant from San Diego State University to conduct California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) funded pedestrian and bicycle safety programming. The OTS programs raise awareness about traffic rules, rights, and responsibilities whether you are driving, walking, or bicycling. Specifically, programs are designed for high-risk populations, including youth and older community members, in an effort to encourage safe alternative transportation behaviors. The overarching program goal is to reduce the total number of pedestrians and bicyclists killed or injured in traffic related crashes.

Through this initiative, Circulate coordinated with SDSU's Transportation Services department to install permanent creative crosswalks at four (4) high-volume intersections across campus. These areas were identified because of ongoing conflicts between drivers entering and exiting parking structures and pedestrians crossing the street to reach residence halls and school resources. In collaboration with Transportation Services, the School for Public Affairs, and the Aztec Education Committee, Circulate hired student artists, reviewed final designs, procured materials for permanent installations, and completed the installations.

Funding for this project was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
