Solana Beach Safe Routes to School

Circulate San Diego partnered with CR Associates and the City of Solana Beach on a multi-year Solana Beach Safe Routes to School Plan. Safe Routes to School is a nation-wide program that aims to create safer conditions around schools, and to encourage students, parents, and school staff to walk, bike, or roll to school. Participating schools included Earl Warren Middle School, Skyline Elementary School, St. James Academy, Solana Vista Elementary School, Santa Fe Christian School, LePort Montessori, Fusion Academy, the Boys and Girls Club, and the Child Development Center.

School walk audits are one of the most effective methods to gather input from stakeholders on opportunities and challenges to walking and biking, student safety, and general circulation and access concerns. Circulate led nine school walk audits, one at each school, in the City of Solana Beach. Walk audits were conducted during school drop-off or pick-up hours. During the assessment, Circulate documented and photographed existing infrastructure and operational and behavioral conditions that served as barriers or challenges to safe walking, bicycling, and vehicle or transit circulation in the school area.

After the completion of the walk audits, Circulate drafted Walk Audit and Summary Reports for each school to be used in the overall master plan document. Each report contained a school profile, student tallies, CalEnviroScreen and Healthy Places Index scores, collision summaries, and detailed maps and observations documenting walking conditions, riding and rolling conditions, and driving conditions.
