Pedestrian Killed and Bicyclist Seriously Injured Over Weekend
SAN DIEGO (June 10, 2019) – On Friday, a bicyclist was hit and seriously injured by a driver pulling onto Rosecrans Street into the bike lane. On Saturday evening, a female pedestrian was killed when she entered W. Washington Street in Hillcrest into the path of two police cruisers. Both crashes are detailed in the San Diego Police Department’s Watch Commander’s Log.
"Even when human error occurs by either pedestrians or motorists, our streets should be designed to ensure errors are not fatal," said Oscar Medina, Project Manager for Circulate San Diego. “One death on San Diego’s streets is too many.”
Circulate San Diego and a diverse coalition of 20 organizations have promoted a campaign for the last two years called Vision Zero, with the goal to end traffic deaths and serious injuries in San Diego by 2025. Mayor Faulconer and the San Diego City Council adopted a 10-year Vision Zero strategy in 2015.
The concept behind Vision Zero is that traffic deaths are preventable – through safe street design, education, and enforcement. The program has been successful in other U.S. and European cities. To date, over 20 cities across the U.S. have adopted a Vision Zero goal.
No loss of life is acceptable and these collisions shows that more work is needed through increased investment in safe street infrastructure.
