SANDAG getting serious with connecting transit to the airport
A few weeks ago, SANDAG and Mayor Kevin Faulconer released a plan to create new transit connection to the San Diego International Airport.
Earlier this week, SANDAG released a Request for Information for “Airport Connectivity Concepts in the San Diego Region.” SANDAG is requesting suggestions about how to pursue three categories of connectivity, including:
- Category 1 - Automated People Mover (APM) or Similar Service,
- Category 2 - San Diego Grand Central Station (SDGCS) Mobility Hub, and/or
- Category 3 - Transportation System and Demand Management Technologies and Pricing Strategies.
This move from SANDAG shows they are serious about airport connectivity. It also comes after Circulate San Diego’s online organizing generated more than 500 emails to the San Diego Airport Authority, showing the large public interest in making transit a priority for airport users.

Last week City of San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer delivered his State of the City speech, which included a variety of policies championed by Circulate San Diego.
The Mayor proposed fixing 300 of the city’s most dangerous intersections, less than a year after our breakthrough on Vision Zero when the City committed to fixing the 15 most dangerous intersections identified by Circulate.
Faulconer highlighted his administration’s effort to reform parking policy, which was brought to the public conversation through Circulate’s groundbreaking 2017 report on Transit Oriented Development.
Finally, the speech detailed the Mayor’s commitment to connecting the trolley to the airport, which we have been campaigning for over a number of months.
The speech shows how Circulate is shaping the agenda in San Diego. Our efforts are moving the needle on transportation and land use.
Support Parking Reform – January 31
The City of San Diego is proposing bold and meaningful parking reforms to make housing more affordable and help San Diego reach its Climate Action Plan goals. The parking reforms will allow new multifamily development to build zero parking spaces, if it provides transportation amenities for residents and the community. Circulate has been advocating for parking reform since 2017 when we released our Transit Oriented Development report, which included recommendations to reduce parking requirements.
