SANDAG Adopts Regional Plan with Direction to Study Alternate Revenues

The SANDAG Board adopted the Proposed Final 2021 Regional Plan put forward by staff at its meeting on December 10. The Board also directed staff to study funding sources other than the controversial Road Use Charge, which SANDAG expected would deliver $19 billion over the life of the plan. The charge has generated large amounts of controversy.

Circulate has previously noted that by relying on speculative revenues, SANDAG risks not being able to deliver on what it promises. Circulate Executive Director Colin Parent was featured in a kpbs segment and quoted in a Voice of San Diego article urging a realistic view of revenue. Colin also got a shoutout in the latest Voice of San Diego podcast.

Vision Zero presentation to Lemon Grove City Council

On December 7th, Circulate staff gave a presentation on Vision Zero at the Lemon Grove City Council meeting. The presentation discussed the Vision Zero commitment, a systems-based approach to traffic safety, and the kinds of infrastructure that delivers safety. The Council asked questions and thanked us for the presentation. They intend to consider adopting Vision Zero sometime next year. Stay tuned!

Op-Ed: Making the Most of the Mid-Coast

In this week’s Union Tribune, our Executive Director Colin Parent published a guest essay calling for better connections between the new Mid-Coast Trolley and jobs. With San Diego’s $2 billion investment in transit for our major biotech jobs center, we can grow our economy by "Making the Most of the Mid-Coast."

We have an opportunity to make our region the most attractive option for our technology sectors, by:

  1. Increasing bus connectivity, bus-only lanes, and safe infrastructure for bicycles and micro-mobility.
  2. Updating the University Community Plan to allow for robust new growth around the region’s transit investments.
  3. Eliminating self-defeating rules that limit growth of our biotech campuses, and allowing more homes, at all income levels.

We encourage you to read the entire op-ed here (Union Tribune article),
