Ocean Beach Elementary School Bike Bus Recap!

Last Friday, Circulate had the pleasure of joining Ocean Beach Elementary for their Back to School Bike Bus! Before the ride, we went over helmet fitting, turn signals, and the rules of the road while biking with families and students.

The Bike Bus began rolling out at 7:15 AM, with about 80 participants traveling down Santa Monica Avenue to get to school.

We’re grateful to students, parents, and school staff who helped make the event safe, fun, and memorable as well as our partners the City of San Diego, Office of Traffic Safety, and SANDAG for helping make the Bike Bus a success!

Circulate Joins Assemblymember Alvarez at Press Event for AB 2433

Last week, Circulate CEO and General Counsel Colin Parent joined Assemblymember Alvarez, Senator Arreguin, and housing advocates at a press event in Sacramento in support of AB 2433, the Affordable Homeownership Bonus Law.

Circulate is proud to be the lead sponsor of this legislation to further reform Bonus Law, which is already the largest driver of new approvals in California. The speakers highlighted the importance of California Bonus Law, it’s role in housing starts, and how AB 2433 will make the program more useful for affordable homeownership.

Circulate Sponsors Council of Infill Builders Summit in Los Angeles

Last week, Circulate sponsored the Council of Infill Builders annual summit in Los Angles.

Mayor Todd Gloria was recognized and served as the event’s lunch keynote.

Our CEO Colin Parent spoke on a panel regarding housing legislation. The moderator included a variety of slides from our report “
Win-Win Bonus,” which documents the high usage of Bonus Law since reforms were sponsored by Circulate in 2020 and 2023.

In particular, the panel discussed relative use of ADU law and Bonus Law, compared with higher profile laws like SB 35 and AB 2011. Some on the panel argued that those laws were important because they allowed for new homes in areas that are especially difficult to receive approvals, and have significant climate and equity benefits.

While Colin agreed with that, he encouraged the room to consider large unit production to be our north star. We currently pay disproportionate attention to flashy large and controversial projects, while paying less attention to the thousands of smaller projects that are modestly larger because of Bonus Law, driving overall production.

Member Exclusive – Vote to name Colin’s new Bike!

Circulate's CEO and General Counsel Colin Parent just bought a fancy new (second-hand) bicycle. We’re inviting the Circulate members to vote on its new name.

Circulate members nominated a variety of names. We have a curated list and are inviting members to vote for their favorite.

The bike is a matte-black Giant Revolt Advanced 0, with a carbon-fiber frame. The new bike joins Colin’s old steel Marin commuter bike. He purchased that 15 years ago as his only mode of transportation while living in Sacramento working in the Jerry Brown Administration. This new one is just for fun.
