This pedestrian audit was conducted in coordination with the Gary and Mary Senior Wellness Center. This audit was hosted on January 30, 2025 and had a group of 9 people. The group included Circulate San Diego, Serving Senior participants, and the Center’s staff.
The Wellness Center is located in Cortez Hill. The audit route took place along: 4th Avenue, Elm Street, 3rd Avenue, Fir Street, 5th Avenue, and 6th Avenue. Between 2019-2023, there were 57 pedestrians injured, 3 pedestrians killed, and 21 bicyclists injured within a quarter mile of the walking route. One particularly tragic incident occurred on October 2, 2022, when a 61-year-old man was killed while on the sidewalk near Fir Street and Fifth Avenue. The older adult was struck by a DUI driver who was speeding.
